This course provides an introduction to postcolonial studies. Approaches from different parts of the world are discussed from interdisciplinary perspectives. The focus is on historical processes of (colonial) power as well as current continuities of colonial discourses. Postcolonial critique also aims at the deconstruction of eurocentric assumptions. Ideas of development, modernization and civilization as well as questions of representation are analyzed.
The course is based on active textual work. This means that every student has to read texts each week in preparation for the course, as discussions are then conducted. In addition, an excursion is planned in form of a postcolonial walking tour through Munich.
